Purpose of ACTS?

The Ambassadors Community for Theological Study is intended to enrich and equip laity for intentional service as ambassadors for Christ in homes, churches, and in their communities. It provides comprehensive exposure to the foundations of Lutheran faith through classroom and experiential education. The primary goals are:

  • To increase in laity the ability to intentionally live and share the Christian faith.
  • To develop in laity a fuller understanding of the Bible, the theology of our church, and the practice of ministry.
  • To equip lay people for leadership in special areas of ministry and service as ambassadors for Christ.
  • Encourage large groups to enroll from one congregation or parish.  A special rate is provided for 6 or more who enroll at the same time.

A typical course will consist of 12 hours of large-group instruction by a recognized authority, plus five two hour small groups in your geographical area led by a rostered leader. Experiential learning and mentoring are also included as part of a certification program. We are continuing to explore various distance learning opportunities.

Why should I get into ACTS?

You are needed as a knowledgeable ambassador for Christ.

ACTS will equip you to answer “yes” to the call to be Christ’s ambassador.

If you’re seeking a deeper faith, the Virginia Synod’s theological school for laity is for you.

ACTS is a series of advanced courses that will help you to look more deeply into biblical truths and to study essential elements of faith. ACTS is designed to prepare church leaders for more effective service.

ACTS provides theological grounding for lay people who are called to lead in congregations, the Virginia Synod, or the ELCA. This educational program is for anyone who wants to enrich his or her knowledge and faith. Enrolling in ACTS can be a significant step in your spiritual growth and a blessing to those affected by your witness.

Course descriptions

Students will receive a certificate of recognition after completing the following six core courses.

Foundations of Lutheran Theology (Confessions) This course will use the Book of Concord to study central beliefs and teachings of the Lutheran Church.  A foundational understanding will develop as the student focuses on Martin Luther’s thoughts on salvation and justification.  By the end of this study the student will leave with practical ways to apply these principals in today’s world.

Old Testament  An introduction to the history, culture and geography of the people and lands of the Old Testament.  The participant will learn about the relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament as they follow the story of Ancient Israel from the time of Abraham to the return from the exile.

New Testament  The participant will study content and development of the New Testament.  The gospels provide the foundation for the church and by the end of this course the participant will have an increased knowledge of the New Testament and how it sets us free to share our God-given gifts.

Biblical Models of Leadership  This course will study the many different examples of leadership that the Bible provides.  The participant will study biblical and theological bases for mission in todays communities.  They will begin to develop practical ways to encourage, equip, support and organize congregations and communities for evangelical outreach.

Spirituality and Leadership  Introduces students to the relationship of prayer to leadership.  The course will explore how throughout biblical history prayerfully listening to God changed the way leaders served in response to God’s call.  The participant will learn ways a congregation can prepare and use their many differing personal and spiritual gifts for mission.

The Christian’s Call Today  This course focuses on the Christian’s faith life, work and secular life.  Students will examine their own gifts and how to use their gifts to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ in their daily practices.

Continuing Education

ACTS students are encouraged to continue learning and may enroll in additional classes after certification. A trip to Greece and Turkey was offered in 2008 to explore the 2nd & 3rd Missionary Journeys of Paul.  August 4-13, 2010 a travel opportunity will be available to explore the Lutherlands and Oberammergau Passion Play.
