Virginia Missions Team
"Our mission is to establish 20 new mission starts by 2020…
and to renew/revitalize 40 parishes by 2020"
The Virginia Missions Team meets regularly to:
- Identify potential new mission fields on the territory of the Virginia Synod and to prioritize them.
- Nurture and support congregations that are receiving EOCM Partnership Support and to provide additional funding through the Virginia Synod.
- Nurture and support pastors/leaders who are developing new missions and/or redeveloping existing ministries.
- Offer opportunities/resources for one conference and/or potential cluster of congregations to conduct a ministry review each year in order to evaluate local mission and ministry needs and opportunities.
- Work in partnership with the Evangelical Outreach & Congregational Mission (EOCM) Unit of the ELCA by:
- Coordinating the start of new congregations
- Redevelopment and/or revitalization of existing ministries, and
- Supporting special or emergency mission opportunities
As "ambassadors for Christ," you are encouraged to plant seeds for mission within your congregation. The future funding for new ministries in Virginia will depend upon the support of local congregations and individuals.
- Please consider asking your new congregation to be a Mission Partner – designating a portion of your budget toward a congregation that is new or being redeveloped. Already we have a strong base of Mission Partners, but your commitment is needed.
- Please consider becoming a prayer partner with us. Pray for God to provide generous, mission-minded donors, who will make it possible to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of Virginia.
- Please consider the needs of your community. Is the area growing beyond the capacity of a local congregation to meet the needs? If your congregation wants to stay small and intimate, consider giving birth to a new congregation or starting a satellite location.
- A small commitment goes a long way. You don’t have to do it all at once. Consider a congregational commitment of $5,000 per year for 5 years = $25,000 (enough to provide for the startup expenses for a new congregation).
We also encourage you to support the future funding of mission through:
- Mission Partners
- Lutheran Men In Mission
- The Virginia Mission Trust Fund
- The Mission Office for Planned Giving
DID YOU KNOW?
Currently, there are 162 congregations in the Virginia Synod. If each congregation designated $20 a week for mission ($1,040 per year), we would generate a total of $168,480 to start new ministries and transform existing congregations.
