Bishop Robert F. Humphrey

Synod Bishop

The Rev. Robert F. Humphrey is the bishop of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Elected to a six-year term in 2017, Humphrey previously served as Pastor of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, in Harrisonburg, VA, 2010-2017; Grace Lutheran Church, in Waynesboro, VA, 1990-2010 and Zion Lutheran Church, in Waynesboro, VA, 1981-1988. He also served as a counselor at Valley Pastoral Counseling Center, in Waynesboro, VA, 1989-1990.

Bishop Humphrey graduated from The University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Arts double major in History and Political Science in 1977 and from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary with a Master of Divinity in 1981. He interned at Hothorpe Hall in England in 1979-80. He also enjoyed post-graduate studies in Counseling at The University of Virginia from 1989-90. Over the years he has also served in a variety of civic and church leadership roles.

Bishop Humphrey has been married to Barbra T. Humphrey since 1977. They live in Harrisonburg, VA. They have a daughter, Jill Humphrey who is married to Johan Grimsrud. They have two children, Elias and Marja and live in New York City.

Bishop Robert F. Humphrey offers leadership for our Synod and all our rostered ministers under the vision that we are all faithful, bold, and serving. His genuine love for people and the Gospel can be seen as he travels throughout the Synod. The Rev. Kelly Bayer Derrick

Assistant to The Bishop

As assistant to the bishop, Rev. Kelly Bayer Derrick coordinates support for the Synod candidacy committee, oversees the ministry of the Synod’s First Call Theological Education, and Boundaries Training. She coordinates the Synod’s justices ministries (Tapestry, VICPP, World Hunger, and other ELCA justice initiatives). Pastor Bayer Derrick engages in visioning for support of healthy leaders – both rostered and lay person. She also provides planning insight for Synod Assembly.

The Rev. John Wertz Jr.

Director of Evangelical Mission (DEM)/Assistant to The Bishop

As the Director for Evangelical Mission and an Assistant to the Bishop, Rev. John Wertz, Jr. provides support and resourcing for the congregations and leaders of the Virginia Synod in the areas of stewardship, congregational vitality and mission strategy.  He leads the Virginia Synod Stewardship Table, the Virginia Synod Mission Table and works with congregations to provide leadership development.  He also works with the ELCA Domestic Mission Unit to explore new and expanded ministry opportunities in the Synod.

The Rev. Dave Delaney

Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The Rev. Dr. Dave Delaney provides vision and strategy for, outreach to, and formation of, Virginia Synod ELCA youth and young adults as Ambassadors for Christ. His main responsibilities include synod youth ministry, campus ministry, outdoor ministry, congregational resourcing for youth and young adult ministry, as well as being a representative of the bishop.

Rebecca Walls

Executive Administrative Assistant to the Bishop
Call Process Administrator

As Executive Administrative Assistant to the Bishop, Rebecca Walls is Bishop Humphrey’s, right-hand woman. Rebecca provides office services by implementing administrative systems, policies, and procedures, monitoring administrative projects, and providing supervision of support staff in the Office of the Bishop. Rebecca also functions as the liaison for the call process assisting with every stage of the call process and caring for congregational needs for pastoral services.

Emily Pilat

Director of Communications

Emily Pilat works to communicate the story and mission of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as well as to educate and equip members of the Virginia Synod to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ in an ever-changing world. As the director of communications, she is the one to set and guide the strategy for all communications and public messages of the Virginia Synod. Emily is responsible for the synod website, publicizing events, the synod’s publications, social media, and other forms of communication.

Lenae Osmondson

Administrative Assistant in the Eastern Office of the Bishop

Lenae Osmondson works out of our Synod Office located in Norfolk. She provides administrative support for event planning, scheduling, record keeping, communication and publicity, finances, and technical support. Lenae provides administrative support for our ACTS (Ambassadors Community for Theological Study) and Roots & Wings programs, the synod council, our Deans, and our annual Gathering of the Ministerium.

Tammy Kasper

Administrative Assistant
Financial Bookkeeper

If you call the Synod office in Salem you may hear Tammy’s cheerful voice answer the phone. As an administrative assistant, she performs general office support for the Synod office, which includes managing and distributing information within the Office of the Bishop. Tammy provides administrative support with registration for major events in the Synod. As the bookkeeper, she also handles the fundamental aspects of the synod’s financial record keeping system including managing accounts payable and receivable.

Richard Hoffman

Financial Consultant

Richard Hoffman is our financial consultant responsible for the accounting operations of the synod.  In conjunction with the synod treasurer and financial bookkeeper, he is responsible for collating, preparing and interpreting reports, budgets, accounts, commentaries and financial statements, controlling income, cash flow and expenditure, supervising staff and liaising with synod staff and other colleagues.

George “Skip” Zubrod

Financial Consultant, Non-Stipendiary

Skip Zubrod is our financial consultant, non-stipendiary. He serves as an assistant to the elected Treasurer of the Virginia Synod, the Bishop, and the paid Financial Consultant of the Virginia Synod. The Financial Consultant, Non-Stipendiary works to support the mission of the Virginia Synod in being Ambassador’s for Christ. The Financial Consultant, Non-Stipendiary will work with the Bishop, Synod Council, and Synod Staff and assist in matters of financial planning, check signing, financial advice for the Synod and other financial matters as requested by the Bishop.
