Do Justice: March 5, 2020

/, News/Do Justice: March 5, 2020

Welcome to Do Justice, a semi-monthly newsletter of the Virginia Synod, lifting up God’s call and command that we, God’s people, do justice. You will find helpful info about justice ministries in congregations, around Virginia, and through the ELCA. If you have stories of justice to share from your congregation, please share those with me at bayerderrick@vasynod.org so I can share them with others in the synod!

The Rev. Kelly Bayer Derrick
Assistant to the Bishop

On March 7, the church commemorates Perpetua, Felicity, and their companions who were martyred at Carthage 202. Perpetua, a noblewoman and nursing mother, and Felicity, a slave in her household, were imprisoned for their faith in Jesus. Perpetua’s memoirs describe her baptism, visions, and willingness to leave her family – including her infant son – for Christ. Let us pray for all of those who face persecution for their faith and for all the faithful everywhere:
Gracious God, in every age you have sent men and women who have given their lives in witness to your love and truth. Inspire us with the memory of Perpetua, Felicity, and their companions, whose faithfulness led to the way of the cross, and give us courage to bear full witness with our lives to your Son’s victory over sin and death, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. International Women’s Day

This year, on Sunday, March 8, your congregation has the beautiful opportunity to celebrate and honor women leaders around the globe—and to double your impact by uplifting the International Women Leaders (IWL) program. Sunday, March 8, is the perfect time for your congregation to take an offering for IWLas it will go twice as far—gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100,000.
You can download this worship resource with prayers and hymns to use in your service, as well as this new bulletin insert. Thank you so much for celebrating with us and investing in the future of women leaders!

Lutheran Disaster Response: Nashville Tornado

Early Tuesday morning, a powerful tornado ripped through Nashville and other parts of Tennessee, leaving destruction in its wake. The tornado was part of a series of severe storms. At least 24 people have been killed, homes and other buildings have been destroyed, and thousands of people are without electricity. The worship space for St. John’s Lutheran Church of Nashville, an ELCA congregation, was crushed by the tornado.
Lutheran Disaster Response is working with those in the impacted area — including the ELCA Southeastern Synod, Inspiritus (formerly known as Lutheran Services of Georgia and Lutheran Services in Tennessee) and local congregations — to respond with immediate relief. You can give now to help people whose lives have been impacted by this devastating tornado, or download a bulletin insert to spread the news in your congregation.
